Do I get any days off?
Our Full Year folks are given 10 days off around Christmas, one week off for Spring Break and six floating days off to use as you want to. Our Summer Team Members are given two floating days off to use however they wish. This allows people to attend important weddings or graduations or to take additional vacation. Most Team Members will combine their days off with their weekly sabbath in order to have a long weekend away from Louisville.
Are the start and end dates flexible?
Unfortunately, no. We expect our Team Members to all arrive on the same day and move out on the same day. Team unity and the programatics of HOPE make it neccesary to have everyone here at the same time for the same amount of time. Plus, you don't want to miss the fun orientation or amazing closing retreat.
Does it cost anything to be a part of HOPE?
One special point should be noted when discussing this: No one is ever accepted, rejected or asked to leave based on financial support. Your ability or inability to raise financial support has no baring on your involvement with HOPE. Therefore, it should not be a factor when deciding to apply for HOPE.
Our Team Members fundraise in support of their entire team's needs. For a team of 6, we ask each team to fundraise $3600 per month. The way this works is that we ask HOPE Team Members to personally fundraise $600 a month to be a part of the program. For our full year people, this amounts to $6600 for the year. For our summer people, this amounts to $1800 for the summer. This allows those with more financial resources to care for their teammates who may not have as much fundraising success. We guide people through the fundraising process (check out our Fundraising Guide) and you will nurture the support of your friends and family through monthly letters and updates.
Do you provide health insurance?
For those that need it, our Full Year Team Members are provided quality health insurance. To know more about the specifics of our health insurance plan, please write to rick@jeffersonstreet.org.
Is it safe?
It is safer to be within the will of God than outside of it. To this end, the safest place in the world is within God's hands, whether he places you in the surburbs, farmlands or the city. To be outside of his will is the most dangerous place you can be, whether that be in the suburbs, farmlands or the city. If he is calling you here, then yes, in this regard it is safe.
That being said, HOPE spends ample time doing safety training. We doing excersises and training to ensure our Team Members know how to carry themselves in an urban setting, what things to look for, and what situations they must always avoid. Our rules in this area are strict in order to protect people from harm. The physcial safety of our Team Members of the utmost importance to us.
What training will I receive?
You will receive 2 weeks of training at the beginning of your HOPE term. In addition, you will receive ongoing weekly training throughout your time with us to ensure you are well equiped to love your new friends to the best of your ability. To learn more, you can read through last summer's Handbook.
